Charsi Chicken Kadhai Recipe

Simple and easy Charsi Chicken Kadhai recipe that is light on stomach, has no spices and is diet friendly.

Charsi Chicken is one of the simplest yet one of the tastiest chicken dishes that brings out the true flavours of the chicken. It is popular in Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, and North India.

The dish is very simple and is cooked with ginger garlic paste, tomatoes, salt and oil. It can be eaten with roti, paratha, or even can be eaten as it is. The unique taste of the dish is based on the natural flavours of chicken, raw chillies and tomato.

The dish has very low calories as chicken has a GI of 0 and Tomatoes have a GI of 15. It is diabetic-friendly and can also be cooked with low oil to make it cholesterol-friendly.

Ingredients

  1. 500 grams chicken-on-bone for 3 servings
  2. 1 large or 2 small-sized tomatoes for puree
  3. 2-4 tablespoons of oil or ghee
  4. 1-2 green chillies
  5. salt to taste

For marination:

  • One tablespoon Ginger Garlic paste

Optional:

  • Ginger juliennes for garnish

Recipe for Charsi Chicken Kadhai

  1. Marinate the chicken with salt and ginger garlic paste for at least 30 minutes. The best taste comes when marinated for 2 hours.
  2. Heat some oil in a kadhai or wok.
  3. As soon as the oil gets sufficiently hot, add the chicken and keep stirring to ensure it doesn’t stick.
  4. Keep stirring for 10 minutes or until the chicken loses its white colour.
  5. Add the tomato paste and stir until the oil separates from the gravy.
  6. Add the green chillies and stir for a couple of minutes. If you want this dish more spicy, add chillies to the oil before adding chicken.
  7. Serve with Roti, Paratha, or Naan.

Precautions

To ensure the dish tastes the best, do not add any extra water to either the chicken or to the tomato puree.

If you want, you can serve it with a dash of lemon or squeeze a small part of the lemon on the dish.
